Three Directors of Natural Parks will be Fired

Three directors of the three natural parks will be fired. Stefan Yurukov, the director of the State Forestry Agency and a member of the Supreme Council of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, has prepared the orders for dismissal of the directors of the three largest natural park in Bulgaria - Vitosha managed by Thomas Belev, Strandzha managed by Stefan Zlatarov and Vratsa Balkan managed by Nikolai Nenchev. On Friday representatives of the National Assembly demanded the intervention of the Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev and the resignation of Stefan Yurukov. The environmentalists responded immediately with protests and a blockade of key boulevards in the capital city of Sofia. In an official letter of the Association for Wildlife Balkans to Sergey Stanishev says: "For us there are no comprehensible, objective and professional reasons for their release. On the other hand there is pressure of offshore, touristic and construction companies who intend to acquire resources in those parks and build them. Given the considerable experience and professionalism of the colleagues, the only explanation for their release is an attempt to be destroyed 1/3 of the Bulgarian system of protected areas with the aim of mastering their private interests and their construction. The fact that all three parks expect funding by the Operative programme "Environment" makes corruption scheme possible.”
