2009 European Forest Week is Launched
Bulgaria celebrates the Day of the forest since 1925. The initiative “European forest week”
is jointly organized by the European Commission, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the Ministerial Conference on the Protection of Forests in Europe. Its aim is to inform people about the significance of forests for environmental protection and the European economy as a whole.
Bulgaria is among the countries with the largest percentage of forests which cover 1/3 of its territory and they are natural. More than 4% are not affected by human activities.
43 world endangered species inhabit the Forestry Fund in Bulgaria and about 80% of the territories included in NATURA 2000 network. However, only 10% of the Forestry fund are considered as protected area.
